About Vickie

Hi there. Come on in for a glimpse into my life as a knitter, cat mom, mother and teacher to all who want to learn how to knit.

About Vickie

Okay this is not the most flatterng photo.

It's mid-afternoon on one of the last hottest days in September, mid 30s in Celsius.

My air conditioner is packed away because it's supposed to be Fall, haha.

Yup I just knew it would happen.

So this is me looking a little rough around the edges yet there's the yarn and needles in my hot little hands.

Have you ever heard of the old saying 'she was born with a silver spoon in her mouth'?

Well this gal was born with some needles in one hand and super soft yarn in the other.

I've been knitting pretty much all my life but you know what?

Teaching you how to knit and sharing my knowledge with you is one of my favorite things to do.

lets have a seat in my livingroom and get aquainted

This is my small livingroom space where all the knitting creations happen. I just completed another round blanket for a friend of mine.

This knit blanket was done in a cotton blend so it won't be too heavy but it's still nice and soft to cozy up in.

So as we all get nestled in here I'll tell you a little more about myself.  I come from quite a crafty family.

My mom loved to sew, knit and crochet and my grandmother was a seamstress plus she did some beautiful embroidery work.

So growing up with crafts all around me was really cool. There was always something new to learn

Knitting was my favorite although putting together jigsaw puzzles with dad or crocheting granny squares with mom was also fun. It's also a cherished memory.

And now my love for knitting and helping you learn gives me a lot of joy so let's get started.

I'd love to show you a couple of my very simple knitting designs.

This storage ottoman is a perfect way to store some of my favorite knitting yarn. The size is perfect too.

But as a knitter I just like making covers for things and this was a perfect knitting challenge

Oh I quite like the fabric and design but somehow it just needed to be covered because of Oscars fur and because I thought it would be cute.

This ottoman cover was a fun little knitting design project.

It's like a giant sock cover and I can just slip it off to wash it. Easy peasy.

And this is another warm easy knit blanket I made for the chair across the room. Round blankets are fun to knit. There's so many ways to make them.

You just have to knit yourself a couple of easy knit blankets to snuggle up with.

Knitting a blanket is very simple and you're gonna love snuggling up on the couch and knitting one for yourself.

There's even a temperature blanket knitting pattern right here on site that you can check out if you like.

It's my favorite one - it's all done in Garter stitch. Now that was easy to knit and fun too.

What does this about me stuff have to do with you learning how to knit?

My first thought is about you and how to make learning how to knit as easy to learn for you as possible.

And what I have to offer is over 45 years experience knitting all kinds of items and learning to knit without a computer. LOL

And then perfecting my knitting skills with the computer. I just keep getting better with age. (well I like to think so)

I even bought some knitting classes a few years ago so that I could become a better knitter and teacher. There listed below so you can take a look.

Simple-knitting has been up and running for a few years now helping people just like you learn how to knit

And happily there have been many successes - here's what a couple of people had to say about my knitting instructions:

I just wanted to say thank you so much for creating this website. I have always wanted to learn how to knit but could never really master the instructions but thanks to your website I have been able to complete a blanket and a scarf! Your instructions are excellent and so clear! Thank you again. Kind Regards Eva

Alexander writes - Awesome instructions and awesome patterns. This site is now bookmarked in my favorites! Thanks!

Sarah writes - Vickie, you're amazing. I can knit now! That simple cast on and your pictures finally got it to click for me. Thank you so much!

Over the years i've even bought some knitting classes

Some of you may be familiar with an online company called Craftsy? What is Craftsy?

Craftsy is an online resource for learning basic and advanced skills for a variety of hobbies like knitting, crochet, cake decorating, sewing and so on.

The list is quite long. It's also a membership site now.

Years ago it wasn't a membership site though and that's when I purchased my classes.

Luckily when things changed over I was allowed to keep the classes I purchased.

Here's the link if you'd like to check them out for yourself.

I wanted to purchase some classes mainly to keep current and learn more knitting tips and skills. It was fun. And I still use these amazing classes.

which knitting classes do i own?

Here's a list of a few knitting classes I have. I do have more but these are some of my favorites and they have all helped me be able to help you learn to knit.

Knitting is my first passion and teaching you how to knit is my second passion and doing it well means everything to me.

Knitting class #1 - Handknit Garment Design with Shirley Paden

Knitwear Design

Shirley Paden is a knitwear designer and her classes walk you through the full design experience.

This class teaches you how to design your own knitwear. I really wanted to know a little more about it and now I know.

Shirley Paden is an excellent teacher and very thorough.

I just had to buy the book to go along with her class. It wasn't necessary but I do love referencing my books.

Knitting class #2 - Short Rows with Carol Feller

This class is also amazing, teaching different ways to create short rows. A short row is a row that's not completely knitted because the work is turned before reaching the end of the row. The trick is knowing how to prevent holes and gaps where the short rows are worked. I love this class and love to work the Japanese short rows.

Knitting class #3 - Improve Your Knitting with Patty Lyons

.Many people know and love Patty Lyons and this was a nice down to earth class teaching knitting methods and styles and alternative cast-ons and so on. This is a great class on all the basics of knitting.

Knitting class #4 - Curvy Knits with Marly Bird

Lots of people know and love Marly Bird too. She's a great teacher herself and teaches us curvy girls how to adjust those knitting patterns so they fit perfectly, plus she teaches about the best styles and design features to fit and flatter the plus-size woman

Knitting class #5 - Shetland Hap Shawl with Gudrun Johnston

And this one, oh my, I'm not really a lace knitter but absolutely love Shetland lace and just had to try to make a shetland hap shawl. I'm still in the process of making it. I bought this class purely for selfish reasons. I'm simply love Shetland lace and had to give this a try.

Just in case you're wondering what my favorite kind of knitting is...

My favorite kind of knitting is simple garter stitch knitting and to cozy up on the couch with Oscar, watch TV and knit away the stress of the day.

But there are times I love a knitting challenge!

shetland hap shawl

I mentioned above about purchasing a class from Craftsy titled, Shetland Hap Shawl with Gudrun Johnston.

I wanted to learn about shetland lace knitting because it's so beautiful.

And this shawl is a perfect way to start.

The lace part is simple lace knitting stitches and the other part is simple garter stitch knitting.

The lacey part is the funnest knitting challenge.

Sometimes you've got to challenge yourself  and try something completely different and new and this is a great project to try.

Take care now and remember I'm here to help you learn to knit.

PS by the way....wondering who oscar is?

Oscar3 helping with knitting

Here is my constant companion Oscar, better known as Babes.

He loves helping me with my knitting when he's not getting into mischief.

You may see him around from time to time. He loves having his picture taken.

If you're still curious about how I got started building a website you can read my Site Build It Review.

You see building this website was and still is a dream come true for me.
